Sewage cleanup in Hinsdale, IL
Sewage cleanup in Hinsdale, IL for combined sewer backups and ejector pit overflows: contaminated water out, porous materials removed, lower level disinfected.
Crews dispatched from our DuPage County office · 24/7 emergency line
Hinsdale is a combined-sewer town, and that is the first thing to know about its backups. The village's engineering reports put about 39 percent of the collection system on combined pipes that carry stormwater and sewage together, with four combined sewer overflows to Flagg Creek and a system that runs on gravity with no pump stations. In a heavy summer rain those pipes fill, and the surplus takes the lowest opening it can find: a floor drain, a basement toilet, a shower on the lower level. What comes up is sewage, and the cleanup has to treat it that way from the first minute.
EcoClean Restoration is a DuPage County family business, and Hinsdale backups, from the main or from an ejector pit, are work our crews know. The order never changes: stop the source, extract, remove what cannot be sanitized, disinfect, dry, verify, rebuild.
Who to call, and what the village is doing about it
If your address is on the Flagg Creek side of Hinsdale, the district asks you to call it before a plumber, at (630) 323-3299, so it can check whether the main sewer is involved; that finding is also what the claim turns on. The village itself has spent more than a decade separating combined sewers under its Master Infrastructure Plan and is lining sanitary sewers north of Ogden Avenue in 2026. It reports no sanitary sewer overflows from its separated sewers from 2022 through 2026 to date; the backups that reach us come up through floor drains, basement toilets and ejector pits.
Flagg Creek publishes a basement backup assistance program that may reimburse part of an approved backflow device or overhead sewer, and requires its own permit for lateral repairs and linings; Hinsdale requires a permit for sewer repairs and clean-outs and inspects the work. We do not install the device. We clean up what it would have prevented, and we tell you plainly when that is the case.
What gets removed and why
Water from a sanitary or combined line carries bacteria and everything else the pipe was moving. Carpet, pad, drywall below the water line, insulation, particleboard cabinets and upholstered furniture that touched it cannot be made clean by drying; they are cut out, bagged and disposed of, and the inventory goes in the claim file. Running fans before that removal spreads contamination into the rest of the house, which is the single most common mistake we are called to undo. Our crews work in protective gear, seal the area from the rest of the home and run HEPA air scrubbers through the removal.
The hard surfaces that stay, slab, block, framing, are cleaned and treated with an EPA-registered disinfectant left to dwell as its label requires. Then, and only then, dehumidifiers and air movers go in and the job becomes a measured dry-out with daily readings until the materials meet their targets.
Ejector pits in the new houses
Hinsdale's rebuilt houses put a full bathroom in a deep lower level, below the sewer, on an ejector pump. When the pump, its float or its check valve fails, the pit overflows into a finished room, and the loss is sewage even though the sewer main was never involved. Sump and ejector failures together are the most common recorded cause in our Hinsdale files. The cleanup is the same as a main-line backup; the prevention is a plumber's visit and, often, a high-water alarm on the pit.
Insurance and rebuild
Sewer backup is usually a separate endorsement with a limit that can be far below the cost of a finished Hinsdale lower level. The adjuster receives photographs of the source, the high-water mark in every room, the inventory of what was removed and a scope written in their own line items; approved claims are billed to the carrier. Our reconstruction crew rebuilds the space under the same project manager and pulls the village's remodel permit.
Sewage cleanup in Hinsdale: questions
Sewage came up through the basement shower drain during a storm. What do I do first?
Keep everyone out of the area, do not run fans, and call Flagg Creek if you are on its side of town so it can check the main; then call us. Everything that touched the water is treated as contaminated until the project manager sorts it.
Can the finished basement be dried instead of torn out?
Not the porous parts. Carpet, pad, drywall below the water line and particleboard that touched sewage are removed. Framing, slab and solid wood are cleaned, treated and dried. We save what can honestly be saved and list what cannot.
Will this happen again?
In a combined-sewer section without a backflow device, the next big storm can do the same thing. Flagg Creek's assistance program may pay part of an approved device or overhead sewer; ask the district for the current terms and have a licensed plumber do the work.
